President John Dramani Mahama and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between Ghana and Belarus, culminating in the signing of three key agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, agriculture, and economic development.
The agreements were signed during President Mahama’s State Visit to the Republic of Belarus, where he held a tête-à-tête meeting with President Lukashenko, followed by high-level bilateral discussions involving officials from both countries.
The engagements resulted in the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), covering the establishment of a Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, collaboration between the chambers of commerce of both countries, and enhanced cooperation in agriculture.
The agreements were signed on Ghana’s behalf by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia Jehu Appiah, and Food and Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku.
Agriculture at the Centre of Partnership
Addressing a joint press conference after the talks, President John Dramani Mahama described the visit as a significant milestone in relations between the two countries, stressing their shared commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, equality, and tangible results.
He identified agriculture as a major area for collaboration, noting that Ghana is seeking to modernise the sector through mechanisation, technology transfer, research partnerships, and investment opportunities.
Belarus, known for its expertise in agricultural technology and machinery, is expected to play a key role in supporting Ghana’s efforts to boost productivity and enhance food security.
Beyond agriculture, President Mahama highlighted prospects for cooperation in education, renewable energy, trade, industry, and other strategic sectors critical to sustainable economic growth.
He noted that the newly signed agreements would create a framework for stronger engagement between public institutions and private sector players in both countries.
According to the President, the outcomes of the visit are expected to open new avenues for investment, innovation, and job creation while laying the foundation for a deeper and more productive partnership.
He expressed confidence that the agreements would mark the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana-Belarus relations and translate shared aspirations into practical initiatives that benefit citizens of both nations.
