The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council have begun processes to review public transport fares.
The two transport bodies said they had submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Transport in line with the administrative procedures for fare adjustments.
In a joint statement, the operators said the request forms part of the consultation process used to assess the costs involved in commercial road transport operations.
The move could lead to changes in fares, but no adjustment has been announced.
Operators Urge Calm
The GPRTU and GRTCC said discussions with the Ministry of Transport were expected to begin soon.
They explained that the outcome of the engagement would be communicated to the public after the consultations.
“We wish to assure the general public that engagement will soon commence with the Ministry of Transport and the outcome will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.
The transport bodies urged drivers, vehicle owners, station masters and commuters to remain calm while the process continues.
They also appealed to stakeholders and the public not to take any action on transport fares before the discussions are concluded.
The statement did not indicate when the consultations would end or whether a specific percentage increase had been proposed.
For now, the existing fares remain in place as the Ministry and transport operators prepare to engage.
