The Ghana Private Road Transport Union has indicated that transport fares in Ghana could increase if fuel prices rise during the upcoming petroleum pricing window.
The warning comes ahead of the second pricing window scheduled to begin on March 16, 2026, which industry observers expect could bring higher pump prices across the country.
Speaking in an interview, the Industrial Relations Officer of the union, Abass Imoro, said transport operators are already facing mounting operational costs.
“You know we work for profit, and for some time now prices have remained the same. Some of our people even went out of their way to increase their prices, but we were able to stop them.” - Abass Imoro.
Rising fuel price floors intensify pressure.
Recent industry data indicates significant increases in fuel price benchmarks in Ghana.
The price floor for petrol has increased to GH¢11.57 per litre from GH¢10.46 between March 1 and 15. Diesel has seen an even sharper rise, moving from GH¢11.42 to GH¢14.35 per litre. Liquefied Petroleum Gas has also climbed to GH¢10.67 per kilogramme from GH¢9.38.
These adjustments represent increases of GH¢1.11 for petrol, GH¢2.93 for diesel and GH¢1.29 for LPG within the same month.
Mr Imoro explained that rising fuel costs are only part of the financial pressure facing transport operators.
Spare parts and maintenance costs remain high.
According to the union, the cost of spare parts, lubricants and other vehicle maintenance items continues to strain the finances of commercial drivers.
“We spoke about the prices of spare parts, lubricants and other things we use on our cars, but their prices have remained high. So these are the indicators we look at.” - Abass Imoro.
Although the union typically reviews fares after broader consultations, Mr Imoro acknowledged that a sustained rise in fuel prices would likely trigger an adjustment.
“We do not immediately impose a new fare, but if the price of fuel changes and it is upwards, everybody should expect a change in lorry fare,” he added.
