The Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade is entering its final stage, with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition urging residents and businesses in Kumasi to prepare for temporary power interruptions while critical works are completed.
Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor announced this after inspecting progress on the K1–K2 Project at Anwomaso in the Ashanti Region.
According to the minister, the project will replace the existing 19-kilometre single-circuit 364MVA transmission line with a modern double-circuit line capable of carrying 978MVA, more than doubling the current transmission capacity.
Stronger power network
The project also includes the upgrade of one transformer at the Kumasi, Ahodwo Substation from 66MVA to 145MVA, a move expected to improve the stability and reliability of electricity supply across Kumasi and surrounding communities.
Construction enters its final phase on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Dr Jinapor cautioned that some customers could experience localised and temporary outages to enable GRIDCo to carry out the work safely.
"These temporary inconveniences are necessary to deliver a stronger, more reliable electricity network that will support the continued growth and development of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region," he said.
He appealed to residents to exercise patience, assuring them that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana would work to minimise disruptions and restore power as quickly as possible.
The minister also thanked the people of Kumasi for their understanding, describing the project as a major investment in the region's future electricity infrastructure.
