The Ghana Embassy in the United States has expressed “profound disappointment” following Lincoln University’s decision to withdraw an honorary doctorate degree earlier scheduled to be conferred on John Dramani Mahama.
The development comes just days before the President’s planned visit to the institution, with the Embassy describing the move as unexpected and poorly timed.
Last-Minute Decision Raises Concerns
In a statement issued on March 24, 2026, the Embassy revealed that all arrangements for the visit—including the honorary degree ceremony—had been fully completed after extensive engagements between both parties.
“It is therefore both surprising and regrettable that, just hours ago, the Embassy received a communication from the University indicating that concerns had been raised.” - Ghana Embassy in the United States
The concerns reportedly relate to perceptions about President Mahama’s stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, currently under parliamentary consideration.
According to the Embassy, these issues were not raised during earlier vetting and due diligence processes prior to the invitation being extended.
The Embassy emphasised that the decision was communicated at a particularly sensitive moment, noting that the President had already arrived in the United States in anticipation of the visit.
“The timing of this development is deeply concerning… with the President already in the United States,” the statement noted, adding that the visit had been accepted in good faith.
Officials highlighted that the engagement was meant to reinforce longstanding ties between Ghana and Lincoln University, which has historic links to Ghana through Kwame Nkrumah.
Call for Dialogue Amid Diplomatic Tensions
While acknowledging the University’s right to engage internal stakeholders, the Embassy cautioned against attributing national legislative processes to a single individual.
It stressed that such issues are subject to democratic debate and institutional procedures in Ghana.
“President Mahama has consistently demonstrated leadership grounded in democratic principles, respect for human rights, and inclusive dialogue.” - Ghana Embassy in the United States
The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement, expressing hope that both sides would resolve the matter amicably.
It concluded by urging a “thoughtful and balanced resolution,” anchored in the historic relationship between Ghana and the University.
