President John Mahama has arrived in Lyon, France, to participate in the One Health Summit, where he is expected to play a central role in global discussions on health security, food systems, and international cooperation.
Mahama’s participation places Ghana at the forefront of high-level conversations on strengthening global health systems at a time when countries are under pressure to improve preparedness and response to emerging health threats.
At the summit, President Mahama will co-chair the high-level segment alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The gathering has brought together world leaders, health ministers, and global health experts to examine key challenges facing health systems worldwide.
As founder of the Accra Reset Initiative, Mahama is expected to help shape discussions around reforms aimed at making health systems more resilient, inclusive, and better coordinated.
He is scheduled to deliver two keynote addresses during the summit.
Ghana’s Voice on Global Health Security
The first address will be delivered at a session on Global Health Architecture, which will be co-chaired by President Macron and Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
That meeting is expected to focus on reforms to international health structures and could endorse a Political Declaration aimed at strengthening global health cooperation.
Mahama’s second keynote address will open the summit’s high-level segment for Heads of State and Government, where he is expected to present Ghana’s commitments and perspectives on global health security.
Bilateral Talks With Macron in Paris
Following the summit, President Mahama will travel to Paris on Wednesday, April 8, for an official visit to the Élysée Palace, where he will hold bilateral talks with President Macron.
The discussions are expected to centre on strengthening Ghana-France relations and expanding cooperation in areas including health, education, trade, investment, and regional security.
Before the meeting at the Élysée Palace, Mahama will also be received by Gérard Larcher at the French Senate.
The President was welcomed to Lyon by members of the Ghanaian community, who gathered to receive him on Easter Monday.
His visit is expected to reinforce Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with France while also elevating the country’s role in shaping international health policy discussions. Mahama is expected to return to Accra after completing his engagements.
