The Office of the Special Prosecutor has begun assessing Afenyo-Markin extortion allegations following claims made publicly by Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi against the Minority Leader.
In a statement, the OSP said it had taken note of the allegations of extortion and related conduct involving Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The development adds another layer to the growing dispute between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO.
OSP Receives Multiple Petitions
The anti-corruption agency confirmed receiving petitions asking it to look into the matter.
According to the OSP, two persons have submitted a joint petition, while two other individuals have separately petitioned the office over the allegations.
The OSP has not announced the opening of a formal investigation at this stage.
Instead, it said the claims would first be examined to establish whether they fall within the scope of its legal authority.
“Given the nature of the allegations, the OSP will assess the case and determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted,” the statement said.
The assessment will therefore determine whether the matter proceeds to an investigation.
The allegations come amid a public disagreement between Mr Gyamfi and Mr Afenyo-Markin over GoldBod and Ghana's gold trading programme.
