The Petroleum Commission of Ghana and the Petroleum Commission of The Gambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in the regulation and development of the upstream petroleum sector, marking a fresh step towards closer collaboration between the two West African institutions.
The agreement is expected to create a framework for both regulators to share expertise, build technical capacity and exchange experiences as they work to develop stronger and more resilient petroleum governance systems.
According to the Petroleum Commission of Ghana, the partnership will promote cooperation in key areas including petroleum regulation, governance, licensing, procurement and stakeholder engagement.
Officials believe the arrangement will allow both countries to learn from each other's experiences while improving institutional capacity to manage their upstream oil and gas industries more effectively.
The Commission described the agreement as part of a broader effort to support sustainable growth within the sector while ensuring that natural resources generate long-term benefits for citizens.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
The MoU also reflects growing recognition that collaboration among African petroleum regulators can help countries respond to changing dynamics in the global energy industry.
"As we deepen regional partnerships, we continue to demonstrate that meaningful collaboration can drive innovation, strengthen institutions, and create lasting value for our people," the Petroleum Commission of Ghana said in a statement.
The partnership comes as several African countries seek to improve regulatory systems, attract responsible investment and maximise value from their petroleum resources through stronger governance and technical cooperation.
Officials expect the agreement to deepen institutional ties between Ghana and The Gambia while contributing to more effective management of the upstream petroleum sector across the region.
