The government has intensified efforts to boost Ghana’s electricity generation capacity, with Energy Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor directing developers of the Takoradi 900MW Power Plant to accelerate work and aim for an earlier completion date.
Speaking after a meeting with the AKSA team and key energy sector stakeholders, the Minister said the project remains a critical component of Ghana’s energy expansion strategy.
The combined-cycle power plant, which is expected to add 900 megawatts of generation capacity to the national grid, is currently scheduled for completion in December 2027.
However, Dr. Jinapor has urged project developers to advance implementation efforts and work toward delivering the facility by September 2027.
According to the Minister, discussions focused on ensuring steady progress and addressing factors that could delay the project’s execution.
Strengthening Energy Security
Dr. Jinapor described the investment as a major step toward enhancing Ghana’s energy security and supporting the country’s industrialisation agenda.
“This strategic investment will play a significant role in strengthening energy security, supporting industrialisation, and meeting Ghana’s growing electricity demand,” he stated.
The Minister expressed confidence in the project’s successful delivery and indicated that government will continue engaging stakeholders to ensure timelines are met.
Once completed, the Takoradi 900MW Power Plant is expected to significantly improve electricity supply reliability and support Ghana’s long-term economic growth objectives.
