The Government of Ghana has assured the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers that plans are in place to settle their 17-month salary arrears through a structured payment schedule beginning May 2026.

The assurance follows a protest march by the group to the Ministry of Finance, where they presented a petition over what they described as prolonged delays in receiving their salaries.

Addressing the aggrieved teachers, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko confirmed that arrangements had been finalised to begin payments.

“Even though the Finance Minister is out of town, he instructed me to conclude the processes… That payment will start from May,” he said.

He explained that the arrears would be cleared in phases, with affected teachers receiving four months’ worth of salaries each month until the full backlog is settled.

Government Responds to Mounting Pressure

The latest assurance comes after sustained pressure from the teachers, who had earlier petitioned the Presidency. A presidential staffer, Samuel Ayeh, had received the petition and promised action.

The demonstration at the Finance Ministry highlighted growing frustration among affected teachers, many of whom have gone over a year without pay.

The planned payments are expected to bring significant relief to the teachers, restoring confidence and easing financial hardship.

If implemented as outlined, the initiative will mark a decisive step in addressing one of the most persistent salary concerns within Ghana’s education sector.
