Apple Launches iPhone 18 Pro With Variable Aperture Camera

Apple has launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, putting photography, battery life and artificial intelligence at the centre of its latest premium devices.

Unveiled during Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, the phones retain the general appearance of the previous generation.

The bigger changes sit inside, led by what Apple describes as its “largest camera improvement in years.”

Both models feature a 48 megapixel main camera with a variable aperture system built around six thin blades. The camera can adjust how much light reaches the sensor, offering better control in dim environments and different depths of field.

Apple has also added manual controls for white balance, shutter speed and aperture, alongside a histogram. New photographic styles allow users to adjust texture and grain.

The phones can record 4K video in Dolby Vision HDR and apply cinematic effects after footage has been captured.

New chip and longer battery life

Apple’s A20 Pro chip powers both devices, supported by a redesigned vapour chamber intended to improve cooling during demanding tasks.

The iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max stretches that figure to 45 hours. A smaller Dynamic Island can display three live activities at once.

Apple also previewed a more context aware Siri, launching in beta with English support through iOS 27. More languages are expected in October.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max costs $1,299. That is a $100 increase over the previous models. Preorders open on Saturday, with availability scheduled for September 18.

Burgundy joins the colour lineup this year, replacing orange and giving the familiar design at least one obvious visual change.
