The Apple iPhone Duo has arrived as the company’s first foldable smartphone, giving users a pocket sized device that opens into the largest display yet fitted to an iPhone.
Apple unveiled the device during its September product event, marking its entry into a foldable market already occupied by Samsung, Google and several Chinese manufacturers. Preorders will begin on October 16, before sales open on October 23.
The phone will be available in star white and night sky.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” Apple Chief Executive John Ternus said. He described the device as an example of what becomes possible when hardware and software are designed together.
Large screen folds into a smaller phone
When opened, the iPhone Duo presents a 7.6 inch inner Super Retina XDR display. Apple says it is 50% larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, creating more room for gaming, videos and running multiple applications.
Closing the device reveals a 5.4 inch outer display designed for one handed use. Despite its smaller size, Apple says it provides 90% of the screen area available on the iPhone 18 Pro.
Both screens use the same aspect ratio, allowing text, images and applications to resize without an abrupt change in layout. They also support ProMotion, Always On display and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.
A nano texture finish on the inner screen is intended to reduce glare, reflections and the visibility of the fold crease. Apple has also hidden the inner FaceTime camera beneath the display when it is not being used.
A20 Pro powers foldable design
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and uses a custom vapour chamber to control heat. Its dual battery architecture is designed to distribute power within the folding body while providing all day battery life.
Apple says the hinge has been engineered to open smoothly and withstand regular use, an important claim for a device built around constant folding.
The company has adapted iOS 27 for the two screen arrangement. Applications can make use of the larger canvas, while Apple Intelligence and Siri AI can draw on information shown on the screen and the user’s personal context.
Apple Pencil support will arrive later in the year. Users will be able to write notes, sketch and mark documents on either display using the USB C version of the accessory.
Apple is late to foldable phones. That delay now raises the obvious test: whether the iPhone Duo offers something genuinely easier to use, rather than simply giving loyal customers a folding version of what they already own.
