Former New Patriotic Party National Chairman Paul Afoko has formally filed his nomination to contest the Paul Afoko NPP National Chairmanship race, promising to reunite the party and rebuild its grassroots ahead of the 2028 general election.
Mr Afoko submitted his nomination at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, marking his return to the contest for one of the party’s most influential positions.
Addressing party executives, delegates and supporters after filing, he said the party needed to rebuild trust and heal internal divisions if it was to return to government.
“I have formally submitted my nomination to serve once again as National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
“I do so with humility. I do so with gratitude. But above all, I do so with an abiding faith in the New Patriotic Party and in its capacity to rise again.” - Mr Afoko
‘Reunite, Reorganise, Recapture’
Mr Afoko said his campaign would be anchored on three words: “Reunite. Reorganise. Recapture.”
He argued that the NPP could not afford to remain divided along the lines of previous internal contests.
“There cannot be one NPP for those who supported Candidate A and another NPP for those who supported Candidate B.
“There is only one New Patriotic Party. And every Patriot must have a place in it.” - Mr Afoko
The former chairman said the rebuilding process must begin from the bottom, with stronger attention to polling station executives, constituency structures, communications teams, women and youth.
Afoko Pledges Loyalty to Bawumia
Mr Afoko also pledged to work closely with the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, if delegates elect him National Chairman.
“If you elect me National Chairman, I will work loyally and tirelessly with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to return the New Patriotic Party to government in 2028.” - Mr Afoko
He insisted that the campaign to recapture power cannot be delayed until the election year.
“Our journey back to government in 2028 does not begin in December 2028. It begins now,” he said.
Mr Afoko also pushed back against suggestions that the chairmanship should be decided on regional balance because Dr Bawumia is from northern Ghana.
He urged delegates to focus on competence, integrity, experience and temperament.
“Let us judge every candidate by competence, integrity, experience, temperament, and the ability to do the job,” he said.
He added that the party should not “create geographical barriers that our Constitution does not create.”
